JEAN BAPTISTE FRANOIS BUILLARD (1752-1793)

Herbier de la France. 8 vols. [With:] Dictionnaire lmentaire de botanique. 1783. [And:] Histoire des Plantes vnneuses et suspectes de la France. 1784. [And:] Histoire des champignons de la France. 1791. Vol.I only. All Paris: l'Auteur and others. Together 11 volumes (8 vols. plates : 314 x 235mm.; 3 vols. text: 354 x 230mm.) Engraved title, the border printed in two tints, 600 (of 602) engraved plates, most colour-printed with engraved descriptive text at the foot, with a further 14 plates (on 13 leaves, one printed recto and verso), extra-illustrated with two duplicate plate nos. 459 and 24pp. of early manuscript tables in a French hand bound at the front of three of the volumes of the Herbier. (Lacking nos. 457 and 458, and the 12 engraved tables.) The plates bound in contemporary green half-vellum, red morocco-labels on the flat spines (joints weak, split or splitting), the text in contemporary blue boards (backstrips worn). Provenance: Antoine Henri Franois Corrard de Brban, Troyes, France (1792-1871, discrete ink ex-libris stamps on endpapers and preliminaries).

FIRST EDITION OF "PROBABLY THE FIRST BOTANICAL WORK COMPLETELY COLOUR-PRINTED WITHOUT RETOUCHING BY HAND" (Great Flower Books), "illustrated with coloured engravings that are both delicate and accurate" (Blunt & Stearn p.71). The majority, almost 400, of the plates are of mushrooms and fungi. Using a technique that is unusual for botanical illustrations, the plates were printed using a separate copperplate for each colour. Bulliard drew and engraved all the plates himself and was responsible for the colour-printing. The manuscript indices are probably compiled by Corrard de Brban, a leading citizen of Troyes and author of a number of works on its local history. Dunthorne 70; Great Flower Books p.52; Nissen BBI 296; Stafleu & Cowan 905; 907, 908, 910; sold not subject to return. (11)
