HEINRICH RUDOLF SCHINZ (1777-1861)

Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen der Vgel-Gattungen. Zurich: Brodtmanns lithographischer Kunstanhalt, 1830. 2 volumes (including plate volume), 2 (322 x 225mm). Plate volume lithographed throughout, uncoloured title, 144 hand-coloured plates, all printed by K.I.Brodtmann, titled in German, Latin and French. (Plate 139 with short repaired tear to upper blank margin, plates 67, 80 and 134 with plate numbers shaved, occasional light spotting to text and plates.) Contemporary half roan, later green leather lettering-pieces on spines (neat repairs to joints of plates volume.)
A good copy of a rare issue of Schinz's survey of avifauna. According to Nissen the fine plates first appeared in an issue which was published in Zurich (by Orell, Fssli & co) in 24 parts between 1819 and 1830. Weidmann of Leipzig published an issue between 1831 and 1833, and a 'wohlfeile' edition in 1832 to 1833. (2)
