A MAKUZU KOZAN KORO [INCENSE BURNER]
Sealed Makuzu Kozan, Meiji Period (Late 19th/Early 20th Century)
In the form of a pagoda, of three sections, decorated in iron-red, green, blue, yellow, brown, purple and black enamels and gilt, the first floor of the three-roofed pagoda surrounded by a balustrade with attendants crowded behind and next to large curtains decorated with ho-o birds, with three shaped-apertures, each revealing Shotoku Taishi seated in front of a bowl on a lotus padestal, two attendants standing on each side holding fans and his acolytes crowded around him, the two other floors with small apertures, the third outswept roof with a finial modelled as a flaming jewel emerging from a lotus, with a wood box bearing the inscription Made for Shotoku Taishi 1300th aniversary and a description of the Pagoda, dated Taisho Junen san gatsu [March 1921] and signed Makuzu Kozan and a seal
