Lot Essay

A preliminary drawing for this watercolour, dated 1820 and inscribed 'Near St. John's College', was included in Turner of Oxford, Oxfordshire County Museum, Woodstock, 1984, no. 38. The view was also etched, (no. 27), and there exists an example in the British Museum. A finished watercolour was used for the Oxford Almanack in 1896, reproduced in Helen Mary Petter, The Oxford Almanacks, 1974.

We are grateful to Timothy Wilcox for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
