Lot Essay

Born in Weymouth of a French refugee family, Delamotte studied under Benjamin West at the Royal Academy, and was later drawing master at Sandhurst Military Academy. He exhibited at the Royal Academy for nearly sixty years, and also showed work at the British Institution and the Old Watercolour Society. He made several tours of Europe, and is principally remembered for his topographical views, which were often reproduced in books. His views of Oxford rank amongst his finest work.
