Lot Essay

Hearne is known to have made tours of the Lake District and Cumberland in 1777 and 1778 in the company of Joseph Farington (1747-1821): there he made a large number of studies for both Britannia Depicta, 1802, and The Antiquities of Great Britain, 1777-1781. Naworth is an ancient castle, crenelated by Ranulph of Dacre in 1335. The building has remained largely unaltered since its depiction by Hearne, although Salvin executed various works in 1844 following a disastrous fire. On account of his friendship with the artist George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle, Burne-Jones later executed an overmantle depicting the Battle of Flodden Field in the library.
