Lot Essay

The present drawing shows the Old Dee Bridge, from Handbridge, looking across the Dee to the Dee Mills. The mills were bought from the Crown in the late 18th century by the Wrench family and then acquired by the Corporation in 1895. The Mill building was demolished in 1910. A wooden bridge across the river existed at this point from the 13th century onwards. The bridge in the present drawing was widened in 1825-6 and still stands today. For a similar view, by Thomas Allom (1804-1872), see P. Boughton, Picturesque Chester, London, 1997, p. 76, no. 116.
