DONNE, John (1573-1631). Poems ... with elegies on the author's death, to which is added divers copies under his own hand never before in print. London: for John Marriot and sold by Richard Marriot, 1650.
8° (133 x 83mm). Engraved frontispiece author portrait by W. Marshall above calligraphic verses by Izaak Walton, type-ornament headpieces, ornamental initial. (Without first blank leaf, frontispiece just shaved at bottom but preserving engraver's signature, tiny hole in frontispiece, a few leaves shaved at side or headline, faint dampstain in some leaves, lightly browned, date on title reinforced in manuscript.) Early 19th-century tree calf, narrow gilt roll-tool border on sides, red leather spine label (rebacked, slightly worn at extremities).
Fourth edition, second issue with additional verses by Donne, George Herbert, and Ben Jonson. The majority of the sheets were printed for an edition of 1649, possibly unpublished, and the sheets re-used the next year for the present edition. Some of the 'new' poems, despite the claim on the title-page, had appeared in print before, although not in previous editions of the Poems (cf. Keynes). The dedication to Lord Craven by Donne the younger is also new to this edition. The frontispiece was first used in the first, 1635, edition. Keynes Donne 82; Wing 1869 (fifth edition).
