LEAR, Edward (1812-1888). Views in Rome and its environs; drawn from nature and on stone. London: G.Hullmandel for Thos. M'Lean, 1841.

2° (540 x 365mm). Lithographed throughout, title with hand-coloured vignette of Ostia, 'list of subjects' leaf, 25 fine hand-coloured lithographic plates of Rome and the Campagna by Lear, occasionally heightened with gum arabic, printed by Hullmandel. (Light soiling to title.) Modern morocco-backed boards, titled portion of original cloth cover mounted as a label on upper cover (spine slightly faded).

A delightful series of views which capture the vivid everyday life of the people as well as the grandeur of the scenery. The colouring is excellent, but later: Abbey mentions the coloured issue as being mounted and in a portfolio; the tinted issue was priced at 4 guineas and the portfolio set at 10 guineas. Cf. Abbey Travel 183.
