Lot Essay

The composition of this picture derives from the work of Jan Brueghel I. Ertz lists three fully autograph variants of the River landscape with a landing stage: in the Museum of Art, Toledo, USA, in the Galleria Sabauda, Turin, and at Apsley House, London (K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere, Cologne, 1979, p. 575, no. 106, fig. 23, p. 573, no. 95, fig. 211, and p. 580, no. 135, fig. 24). He also lists three possibly autograph variants (ibid., nos. 119, 141 and 142). Of the three fully autograph versions, this picture is closest to the picture in Apsley House, London, dated 1606.
