Each tub enamelled at either side with a coat-of-arms surmounted by a crest within an underglaze-blue spear-head and diaper-pattern border, the stands and covers similarly decorated, surmounted by bud finials

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Cutler. See D.S. Howard, op.cit., p.717 where the author suggests that this service was made for Henry Cutler, great-grandson of John Cutler, from Yorkshire, who was a standard-bearer in the Wars of the Roses.
