Lot Essay

The design on the cover and the base is a copy of a Spanish-American dollar, which was first minted in Mexico City in 1772. See D. Howard and J. Ayers, op.cit., 1978, vol.II, no.691, p.666 where a jade snuff-bottle carved with a similar dollar coin is illustrated. Similar boxes to the present lot are in the Musée Guimet, Paris, illustrated by M. Beurdeley, op.cit., 1962, cat.no.165; in the Collection of Dr. Wesley Gallup, illustrated by J. McClure Mudge, op.cit., 1986, colour pl.42, p.36 together with a 1785 dollar coin; another box and cover is illustrated by Palmer, A Winterthur Guide to Chinese Export Porcelain, p.87, fig.51; and a Samson copy is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam illustrated by C.J.A. Jörg, Chinese Ceramics, 1997, no.351, p.298. A similar box and cover was sold in these Rooms, 1 November 1993, lot 99; and another in our New York Rooms, 21 & 22 January, 1998, lot 37, which was dated 1808.
