Incorporating T. Horsley self-extracting striker patent No. 1138 of 17th. April 1867, the ornate hammers with spurs of hare's-ear form, the breasts of the hammers with cams acting directly on horizontal short levers to effect striker extraction, non-rebounding sidelocks, Jones patent rotary-underlever, best bold foliate-scroll engraving, well-figured stock with engraved butt-plate, the browned bold damascus barrels with broad game-rib and rearward extension to the rear lump

Crudgington & Baker on page 191 of The British Shotgun Vol.1 mention this particular example as follows:- 'Perhaps it is not unworthy of notice that an example of the use of Horsley retracting firing pins has been encountered on a gun by Lyell of Aberdeen, and it is the only non-Horsley gun which we have seen using this system.' The lack of a patent use-number indicates that the gun was built after the expiry of Horsley's patent
