MARLBOROUGH, JOHN CHURCHILL, First Duke of. Autograph letter signed ("Marlborough"), 21 July 1710. 1 page, 4to.

MARLBOROUGH AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS MILITARY SUCCESS. Marlborough (1650-1722), one of history's most accomplished military commanders, thanking an unidentified correspondent for his congratulations on his troops recent victories in France: "I wish they may contribute towards calming peoples minds at home, for I take our divisions there to be the greatest obstacle at present to the conclusion of the Warr, by the encouragement it gives to France to continue in their obstinacy." He also states that he has contacted Secretary [Charles] Boyle [4th Earl of Orrery] concerning his attempts to make an agreement with the French for the release of his son.
