With signed rebrowned two-stage barrel with silver spider fore-sight, the octagonal breech engraved with foliage (worn) and with gold-lined touch-hole, engraved tang, signed flat bevelled lock engraved with rococo ornament and with safety-catch, roller and stepped tail, moulded figured walnut full stock carved with a shell in relief behind the barrel tang, take-down fore-end, mounts engraved with further rococo designs and including shaped side-plate, trigger-guard with acorn finial and shaped vacant escutcheon, and later horn-tipped ramrod, Birmingham proof marks

The maker is almost certainly Thomas Lane of Birmingham, recorded at 38 Newhall St. from 1766 to 1774, and at 29 Newhall St. from 1777 to 1781
