Early 17th Century, probably Italian
With slender tapering blade of flattened hexagonal section with central fuller on each face of the forte incised with Xs and an orb and cross, the iron hilt comprising a seven-ring guard of slender bars, the bottom rings fitted with a pair of symmetrical convex circular shells, each embossed in relief with a pair of crossed keys linked by a knotted cord, long slender vertically-recurved quillons and knuckle-guard, faceted globular pommel, and wire-bound wooden grip

The crossed keys device on the guard suggests that this sword may have belonged to a Papal guard or official
