A Fine Spanish Cup-Hilt Rapier
Dated 1641
With slender tapering blade of flattened hexagonal section with double pierced fullers at the forte, the spaces between the piercing engraved with religious inscriptions in Latin and Spanish and the date 1641 in both Arabic and Roman numerals, struck in front of the fullers on one face with the Toledo mark and a crowned lion rampant, and on the other with marks representing a sword and two crosses, iron hilt comprising cup guard pierced and chiselled with vertical panels of scrolling foliage separated by flutes, plain guardapolvo, long straight writhen quillons with trumpet-shaped terminals, knuckle-guard en suite, compressed writhen pommel, and wire-bound wooden grip
