A Fine Swept-Hilt Rapier
Late 16th Century
With slender blade of flattened hexagonal section with ricasso and fuller on each face of the forte stamped with a partly legible inscription ending 'In Toledo', the iron hilt with guard of slender reeded bars comprising long vertically recurved quillons, arms, the tips linked on the outside by a side-ring, diagonal S-shaped outer bar linked to the centre of the knuckle-guard, and inner trifurcated guard, globular pommel, and wire-bound wooden grip, the pommel, the tips of the quillons and knuckle-guard and the centre of the outer bars pierced and chiselled as openwork knots, and decorated throughout with rows of encrusted silver dots (some rust damage to blade and hilt)
