An 18th-Century silver Butterfield compass sundial,
signed Butterfield a Paris, the octagonal base plate engraved with scroll and foliate panel, hour-scales for 43°, 46°, 49° and 52°, the folding spring-loaded gnomon with bird support and engraved with foliate scrolls, set for latitudes 40°-60°, with compass box, blued-iron needle with brass cap, the underside of the horizontal plate stamped with proof mark and engraved with the latitudes of twenty-two continental cities and towns, the base of the compass box engraved with a further six latitudes of continental towns -- 2.7/8in. (6.6cm.) long
