An 18th-Century silver Butterfield-type octagonal compass sundial,
signed on the horizontal plate Le Maire Fils a Paris, engraved with a part scroll and foliate panel and hour-scales for latitudes 43°, 46°, 49° and 52°, the spring-loaded gnomon with bird support and engraved with scrolling foliage and latitude scale 40°-60°, the compass box with fine blued-iron needle with brass cap, the underside of the horizontal plate engraved with the latitudes of twenty-six continental cities and towns, contained in the original red plush-lined simulated fishskin-covered case -- 3¼in. (8.3cm.) long
