Lot Essay

The label for W. Martin & Co. presumably refers to the manufacture of the castings for this engine, the design referring to the two triple expansion engines fitted to City of Paris when she was launched in 1888 by Thomsons of Glasgow, who also built the engines. City of Paris was sold to American Lines in 1883 and renamed Paris; overhauled and re-engined with quadruple expansion engines by Harland and Woolf, Belfast, 1900 and renamed Philadelphia
