Lot Essay

Bred by Mr. Kirby and foaled in 1814, Blacklock was by Whitelock out of a Coriander mare. He was sold to Mr. Watt after his first race. He was the unbeaten favorite for the 1817 St. Leger but was beaten by a head by Ebor when his jockey eased too soon thinking he had won. He was retired to stud at Bishop Burton, near Beverley. His best progeny were Voltaire and Velocipede (see lot 30).

A later version, dated 1826, is illustrated in J. Fairley, Great Racehorses in Art, 1984, p. 84 (sold, Christie's London, 16 July 1982, lot 28).
