Lot Essay

The race depicted was run at Newmarket on Monday, 3 May 1802 at the First Spring Meeting. The Earl of Darlington's Muly-Moloch beat the Hon. G. Watsons' Gaoler, the Duke of Grafton's Flambeau, and Sir Charles Bunbury's Eleanor (the first filly to win the Derby in 1801).

Bred by the Earl of Darlington in 1798, Muly-Moloch was by John Bull out of Mistletoe by Pot8o's. In 1800, he won a sweep at Doncaster. In 1801, he won at Catterick and York and ran sixth in the Great St. Leger (won by Quiz). In addition to winning at Newmarket in the race depicted in this painting, he won the Pontefract Cup and finished fifth in the Doncaster Cup (won by Alonzo).
