Lot Essay

Built in Germany in 1894, The Washington was owned by the Deutsch-American Petroleum Company and sailed until 1920. A sketch of the same screw steamship, also dated 1894, is in the collection of the Mariners' Museum, Virginia (Sniffen, Antonio Jacobsen: The Checklist (New York, 1984), pp. 300-301).
