A native of and trained in Ireland, John Ramage came to Boston via Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was working in as a miniaturist by 1774. His Loyalist sympathies during the American Revolution forced him to flee Boston in 1776. By 1777, however, Ramage returned to the rebelling colonies, and worked successfully as a portrait miniaturist in New York City between 1777 and 1794. In 1794, Ramage moved to Montreal where he remained for the duration of his life.
