Lot Essay

One of America's earliest known portrait miniaturists, William Verstille worked in several East Coast cities in this capacity. First appearing in Philadelphia in 1782, Verstille was in New York City by 1784, and worked in Salem, Massachusetts and Boston between 1802 and 1803 when he died. He is also known to have worked in Connecticut as well.
