A native of England and trained in London at the Royal Academy, Robert Field appeared in the United States in 1794. Working as a miniature painter and engraver, Field settled in Phildelphia, but moved in 1800 to Georgetown with the relocation of the United States capitol. He remained there unitl 1805, and it may be during this period that the miniature illustrated here was painted. After 1801, Field moved to Canada and subsequently to Jamaica.
