Another son of Charles Wilson Peale, Rembrandt Peale, like his brother Raphaelle, worked as a portrait, miniature and historical painter principally in Philadelphia. Although his career did not initially meet with the succes he expected despite an early commission to paint George Washington (1795), his return to the United States from England in 1803 heralded the beginning of a highly successful career as an artist. Like Henry Inman and Nathaniel Rogers, Rembrandt Peale was a founding member of the National Academy of Design.
