The inspiration for the present drawing comes from Leprince's travels in Russia between 1753 and 1763. Most of his production after 1763 is based on Russian subjects. He engraved a series of prints on Russian Costume, to which the present drawing could be related. Russian costume drawings are at Edinburgh (exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, France in the Eighteenth Century, 1968, no. 438, fig. 214) at Yale (E. Haverkamp-Begemann and A.-M. Logan, European Drawings and Watercolors in the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven and London, 1970, no. 57), at the Louvre (J. Guiffrey and P. Marcel, Inventaire Gnral des Dessins du Muse du Louvre et du Muse de Versailles, Paris, 1921, nos. 9137-40) and that sold at Christie's London, 7 July 1987, lot 161.
