Lot Essay

Although the sitter cannot be precisely identified, a tradition within the owner's family records that he was a member of the Andr family, bankers in Geneva and Paris. The Andr family were among the founders of the Banque de France. One of the descendants of the family was M. Andr, the founder of the Muse Jacquemart-Andr.
Portraits executed in the same technique and on sheets of cream paper of similar size are those of Jean-Robert Tronchin and of Monsieur and Madame Jacob Tronchin. Jacob Tronchin is depicted in the same pose holding his hat under his left arm, Anne de Herdt, Dessins de Liotard, exh. cat., Geneva, Muse d'Art et l'Histoire, 1992, no. 104, illustrated.
