Lot Essay

Compare a slightly earlier figure dated to late Northern Qi/early Sui dynasty with robes depicted in a similarly flattened manner, but with the U-shaped folds centered, illustrated by Saburo Matsubara, The Path of Chinese Buddhist Sculpture, Tokyo, 1995, vol.2, p. 495. Refer, also, to the marble figure of Buddha dated Sui/early Tang dynasty, carved with widely spaced, flattened U-shaped folds and a slightly more defined body, included in the exhibition, Sculpture and Ornament in early Chinese Art, Eskenazi, London, June 11 - July 13 1996, Catalogue, no. 31.
