Of musozutzu type, the first of wood carved in sunken relief with a Ranryo-o mask beneath a dedicatory inscription to Kumano Shrine, the mask painted in color and gold, the himotoshi below the rim, the dark wood cover carved in low relief with stylized phoenixes and paulownia, the second of wood inaid in wood, horn and colored ivory with two persimmons, with shakudo rim and himotoshi, the third dark wood carved with alternating vertical and diagonal rattan patterns, and the fourth of bamboo with a ridged surface

Lot Essay

Kano Tessai (1845-1925) was born in Gifu, the son of a netsuke carver. After studying Chinese literature and painting, he became a professional sculptor and painter in 1868.
