A PAIR OF FRANCO-FLEMISH BAROQUE WALNUT ARMCHAIRS
Circa 1660
Each rectangular padded back and seat covered in 17th Century gros and petit point close-nailed needlework, one with a central panel to back depicting a lady and a gentleman in a garden, the second with back depicting a gentleman surrounded by exotic animals, the seat with a unicorn and a stag under a tree within star-form geometric borders, flanked by acanthus-carved downscrolled armrests, above a pierced foliate-carved stretcher centering a pair of putti holding a crown, on foliate-carved legs joined by a similarly-carved H-stretcher with foliate-carved pad feet (2)

Lot Essay

A fauteuil with similar distinctively carved foliate feet and arm supports in the chteau de Fontainebleau is illustrated in S. de Ricci, Louis XIV Und Rgence, Stuttgart, 1929, p. 85 and another similar armchair dated to circa 1650 is in the Muse des Arts Dcoratifs, (see M. Jarry, Le Sige en France Du Moyen Age A Nos Jours, Paris, 1948, fig. 36).
