A rare 18th-Century French brass horizontal and inclining compass sundial,
signed on the upper face Invente Par Julien Le Roy de La Societe des Arts, the hour dial engraved in Roman and Arabic figures, with hour and degree scale for 49 north, with folding gnomon support for the string dial, the latitude arc arranged to fold beneath the upper horizontal plate engraved for latitudes 0-52, the compass box with adjustable variation or declination needle for positions east or west of true north, the blued-iron compass needle with brass cap, the declination needle with screw clamp, with sprung lever to lid, the underside with tables of latitudes of twenty-eight continental cities and towns -- 3in. (8.3cm.) long
