An extremely finely detailed 1:9 scale model of a Shand Mason horse drawn Fire Appliance of circa 1900
modelled by A.M. Tyrer from contemporary drawings with brass clad soldered, riveted and bolted copper water tube boiler with 'J' tubes and fittings including twin water gauges with shut-off cocks, twin safety valves, whistle, blower, regulator, injector, clack and blowdown valves and washout plugs. Engine details include twin cylinders 0.7in. bore x 0.7in. stroke, cylinder head lubricators, displacement lubricator, Shand Mason patent expansion valve gear (operated by external eccentrics with hand levers and links controlling the eccentric strap position in relation to the eccentric itself), two piston rods per piston with an overmounted crankshaft with tapered connecting rods, the little end being a ball and socket joint in the crosshead and marine type big end, three bearing crankshaft, the double acting pump rods directly connected to the centre of each crosshead. Other details include boiler feed pump, oil box and fine pipework, valve spindle tail shaft guides, injector, valves and pipes, compression domes, water tank float valve, pump outlet change over valve handle, boiler and pump pressure gauges and other details. Chassis details include channel section side frames, turning lock with coal bunker and firing irons, working leaf springs to both axles, metal tyred wheels with separate spokes and fellows and brass hubcaps, box with footboards and opening lid to reveal tools and pressure hose, two lengths of suction hose, driver's seat with hand brake levers for each rear wheel, lamps, branches, bell and backrest, finished in red, gold leaf and polished brightwork, the box sides lettered London County Council Metropolitan Fire Brigade -- 10 x 14in.
