A finely engineered museum display quality 1/10th scale model of a vertical reversing triple expansion Reheater Marine Engine originally built by the North Eastern Marine Engineering Co. Ltd for the cargo steamship Sussex Trader circa 1947
and modelled by P. Southworth and A. Walshaw No.398 with blued steel clad cylinders 2in., 3in., and 6in. bores x 4in. stroke, cylinder head pressure relief valves, hand lever and rod operated cylinder and valve chest draincocks and pipework, HP and IP poppet valves, the LP with balanced slide valve with steam and hand operated Stevenson's link reverse with double bar links, studded stuffing boxes, rear frame incorporated slipper type crosshead guides, built-up counterbalanced crankshaft with waisted cranks running in five main bearings with wick type oil boxes, shaft coupling and outboard thrust bearing casing containing a chain sprocket for possible electric drive. Further details include LP crosshead driven air and bilge pumps, pipes and valves, surface condensor bolted to the rear frames, water pipework for cooling main, crosshead and big end bearings, steam operated barring gear, main, simpling and emergency shut-off valves, inertial governor, linkage and valve, all pipework with flanged joints, oil boxes and pipes, multi-tubular reheater, dummy pressure gauges and revolution counter and many other details. The engine is finished in blue, 'silver', black and polished brightwork and mounted on a simulated ship's double bottom with laddered walkways and handrails -- 29 x 34in. (75 x 86.3cm.) Original works drawings, pistons.

Lot Essay

The S.S. Sussex Trader was built by Sir James Laing & Sons Ltd, Sunderland and engined by the Wallsend Works of North Eastern Marine Engineering Co. (1938) Ltd of 7500 tons for carrying grain. Engine dimensions were:
HP cylinder - 23in. bore
MP cylinder - 38in. bore
LP cylinder - 65in. bore
Stroke - 45in.
Indicated HP - 2200 at 84rpm
Indicated HP (on trial) - 2650 at 89rpm
This very successful design of engine was used in the wartime Liberty Ships though with simpler cylinder heads and valve gear.

The pistons have been removed from the model in anticipation that the engine will be electrically driven, and a length of Reynolds chain is also included.
