FRASER, James (1713-1754). The History of Nadir Shah formerly called Thamas Kuli Khan, the present Emperor of Persia. To which is prefix'd a short history of the Moghol emperors. London: by W. Strahan for the author, 1742. 8 (197 x 120mm). Folding engraved portrait frontispiece, folding engraved map. (Map slightly browned and with short tear at inner margin, K3-4 a little soiled.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, corners restored but bumped). Provenance: Richard Brown, Wymondham, 1817; Rev.d Chs. Bedford, Dec.r 30th 1845 (ownership inscriptions).
FIRST EDITION. Fraser's panegyric on "this great Hero, whose Actions already are sufficient to convince the world, that few ages have produced his equal," proved ill-founded. The last year's of Nadir Shah's reign turned into a bloodbath, and he is said to have constructed "pyramids of heads" wherever he passed until finally assasinated in 1747. The 40-page catalogue of Fraser's manuscripts has a separate title page and pagination. His collection of Sanscrit manuscripts was acquired on his death by the Radcliffe Library, and moved to the Bodleian Library, in 1872.
