A CARVED WHITE MARBLE STELE
NORTH INDIA, 13TH CENTURY
Of arched form carved on one face with a central rectangular panel containing the shahada above two further bands of bahari inscription within a similar border formed of a continuous band of script, a deeply recessed niche above with pendant mosque lamp flanked by stylised part trees all enclosed within a continuous inscription band, slight surface abrasion, chipping to extremities.
21 x 17.3/8in. (54.5 x 44.3cms).

Lot Essay

Below the central larger shahada the inscriptions consist of Persian verses, not all of which are decipherable. Both borders are koranic; the inner rectangular one contains parts of sura iii,
v.18; the outer arched one contains parts of sura ii, v.255.
