NORTH WEST PERSIA, CIRCA 1860
The shaded brick-red field with a central stumpy tree whose roots form inverted animals heads from whose mouths issue scrolling arabesques with similar animal terminals, the lower corners with demons holding the bases of tendrils twining through the tree and arabesques and issuing various floral sprays, the whole populated with a variety of animals and birds, in a shaded indigo border of palmettes linked by dense flowering vine between light blue and ivory floral meander and minor leafy meander and mill-pattern stripes, plain outer rust-red stripe, a short kilim strip at each end, a few localised areas of damage and crude repair, localised very slight wear, generally not dry
