Lot Essay

These striking corner shelves are interestingly quite similar to French examples of the 1780's. The sober, unadorned taste for this style of furniture in France was known as le got anglais and was often based directly on English prototypes or inspired by the pattern books of designers such as Thomas Chippendale and George Hepplewhite. A related pair of French corner shelves by Joseph Gengenback (known as Canabas, active circa 1766) sold in these Rooms, 26 October 1995, lot 217.
