Lot Essay

Although this example is numbered 2/20 it is in fact only one of two pieces produced in bronze. The original design, of which this is the earliest example, was due to be produced in an edition of twenty but the design of the hinge mechanism was modified for consequent production.
The ingeniousness of the hinges also gives the sitter the feeling that the chair is sprung. This oxymoronic effect continues an emphasis inherent in much of Ron Arad's work; the contrast between the apparent harshness of the material and the actual comfort of the seat.
The bronze version too is particularly finely cast; the edges are all handfinished giving them an acuteness which the stainless steel versions do not attain.
