A German armorial rectangular snuff-box
Circa 1770, probably Frstenberg, contemporary gilt-metal mounts
The edges moulded with scrolls, the cover painted with Mars embracing Venus, his military attributes discarded beside a palm tree, the sides with landscape vignettes showing two mounted fighting figures, sheep and cows, the base with a coat-of-arms surmounted by a coronet, the inside cover with a portrait of Johann Rth von Pongyelk wearing the uniform of an officer of the Hussars, blue doublet with gold frogging and a similar cloak trimmed with fur, his plumed hat at his side (base broken and repaired, crack)

The coat-of-arms are those of Johann Rth von Pongyelk, who was made a Generalmajor in 1790, and his wife who was probably Dutch.
