BLAEU, Johannes (1596-1673). Nieuwe ende waarachtige beschrijvinghe der Zeventien Nederlanden. Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu, 1658.
Engraved wall map of the Netherlands, on six sheets joined, approx. 1085 x 1025mm. Title in headline banner, oval allegorical dedication cartouche, the arms of the seventeen provinces, table of settlements and scale-bars in decorative strapwork cartouches, the sea decorated with yachts, galleons and sea monsters, compass roses, rhumblines. (The map laid down on board and varnished, slight cockling of paper, a few small areas rubbed with loss, some discolouration and browning.)
A VERY RARE wall map of the Netherlands by the most important of Dutch mapmakers. The map is known in 4 states, all very rare; there are no known examples of the first state (1608), there is a single copy of the second state (1622) in the Gttingen University library, only one example, damaged and defective, exists of the third state (after 1638). This, the fourth state, is recorded in 3 examples in the so-called reuze-atlases in London, Berlin, and Rostock. These magnificent productions were respectively the gifts of Amsterdam merchants to James II, Johan Maurits van Nassau to Frederich Wilhelm von Brandenburg, and the States General to Christiaan I of Mecklenburg. Blaeu employed three of the best engravers of his day: Josua van den Ende engraved the map itself, Hessel Gerritsz. engraved the cartouches, and Claes Jansz. Visscher engraved the city views (present in the second but not in this edition). This map is very similar to the single sheet map of the Netherlands published in Blaeu's atlases.
