SELLER, John (fl.1664-d.1697). The Coasting Pilot: describing the sea coasts ... of England, Holland, Flanders, and France. [London: 1690? (date of title-page)].
2 (437 x 271mm). Engraved title-page, 11 double-page engraved maps, comprising 17 charts, one on two sheets joined, typographical ornament letterpress tables and woodcut coastal cross-sections. (Lacking final blank, some maps trimmed to platemarks and with some edges strengthened, short tears to margins, some discolouration.) Modern tan half morocco, green lettering piece.
A VERY RARE maritime atlas. John Seller was hydrographer to Charles II and James II and publisher, surveyor, and compass maker. Only four copies of this work have appeared at auction since 1970, of which two have been substantially incomplete. The British Library copy has ten maps only but a copy sold in these rooms in July 1970 apparently contained 12 maps, the present copy lacking the eigth and twelth but with an extra chart of the English channel. However, 17 charts on 11 double-page maps is generally held to be correct and complete. The title-page comes from a different copy. Wing lists four editions, differentiating them on the basis of the title-page. None of the variant title-pages are dated while the collations remain substantially unaltered, thus the different states of the title-page are used to indicate possible dates of publication. Wing S-2469A (title-page).
