SPURN POINT LIGHTHOUSES -- A collection of three manuscript charts and one printed chart of the estuary of the River Humber and the Spurn Point lighthouses, 1761-64, all on paper, various sizes. The collection comprises:
ITCHELL, Robert, A Survey of the Spurn-Point done for the Worshipful Corporation of the Trinity House of Kingston upon Hull. By their most Obed,t Serv.t Rob.t Mitchell. Manuscript map, ink and wash, on paper, 565 x 440mm. Title set in an architectural tableau incorporating a scale bar of 80 chains to one mile, central compass rose with rhumb-lines to each quadrant, inset description of the positioning of lights on Spurn Point, the chart showing the southern point of Spurn Head, the sand hills and spit, adjoining sandbanks and various depth soundings, double ruled border. (Slightly soiled, one clean tear); together with an almost identical copy of the same manuscript map, with one or two minor variations. (2)
MITCHELL, Robert, This Draught of the River Humber is.. dedicated to the Worshipfull Corporation of Trinity House of Kingston upon Hull. [n.p.]: 1761. Engraved chart of the Humber estuary from Hull to Saltfleet, 560 x 740mm, compass rose, rhumb-lines, the chart showing lights, soundings and church bearings for navigation, with engraved note 'May the 5th 1761. 2d edition', manuscript annotation by Mitchell on lower margin "NB May ye 20th 1761. The Middle being worne away to 12 feet at lower water is now no buoy on it. R.M.". Slightly soiled and creased, a few clean tears.)
ORSBRIDGE, Lieut. Philip. A Survey of the Mouth of the River Humber and Spurn-lights, as intended to be erected is most humbly presented to Sir George Saville, Bt....April 1764. Manuscript chart of Spurn Head, ink and wash, on paper, 550 x 760mm. The chart orientated to the West, central compass rose, rhumb-lines, inset cartouche with design for two new lights at Spurn Point, sand bars, depth soundings and scale-bar.
An interesting series of charts drawn up for the Trinity Corporation of Kingston upon Hull. The problem of erosion and deposition of sand on Spurn Head, and the shifting sands on the estuary, made navigation particularly difficult. The 1764 chart shows one of the earlier 1761 Spurn Head lights washed away. (4)
