Provenance: 'Clamantia Peccata. Sunt vox clamorum, vox sanguinis, et sodomorum/Vox oppressorum, Merces detenta laborum' (contemporary inscription on front free endpaper). FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Pitt was imprisoned in the Fleet from 20 April 1689 to 16 May 1691, after failing to benefit from the publication of his world atlas and sustaining losses in building speculations. His book is important for the information it gives on conditions inside debtors' prisons, and also useful for the topographical history of Westminster where Pitt had invested in new buildings. The engravings illustrate the cruelties of gaolers. Wing P2305.
