Lot Essay

This painting probably shows a scene at Auberville, a hamlet close to Envermeu (a village some miles inland from Dieppe) where Sickert lived with his second wife, Christine, during the summers of 1913 and 1914 and again after the war, from 1919 until October 1920. A preparatory squared-up drawing of the subject is in the collection of the University of Reading and reproduced in L. Browse, Sickert, London, 1960 as pl.81a.
