The present drawing is thought to depict Sally Loman, Paul Sandby's nursemaid and two of his grandchildren, Augusta and Harriet, the eldest children of Thomas Paul and Harriet Sandby, who married in 1786. (Thomas Paul was the son of Paul, and Harriet Sandby the daughter of Paul's brother Thomas).
A similar drawing was included in the Hubert Peake sale of the William Sandby collection, Christie's London, 24 March 1959, lot 142 (34 gns. to Appleby). The drawing in the Peake sale is described as set in the garden of Thomas Sandby, in Windsor Great Park. The present drawing is also inscribed 'P.S.Wr' indicating it was painted at Windsor; it was not included in the Peake sale as it was given by William Sandby to Major Beatson.
Another drawing of Sally Loman and Augusta Sandby was sold at Christie's London, 12 July 1994, lot 12 (2,200).
