Lot Essay

Lady Frances Finch (1761-1838), daughter of the 3rd Earl of Aylesford married George Legge, 3rd Earl of Dartmouth on 24th September 1782. The present drawing dates from two years after their marriage and follows the birth of their first son, William, later the 4th Earl of Dartmouth. Lady Frances also sat for Sir Joshua Reynolds, P.R.A. (1723-1792) at the time of the present drawing, her striking features being of particular beauty in both works. (see E.K. Waterhouse Reynolds, London, 1941, p. 73, pl. 227).
