An early Victorian gilt-metal striking giant carriage clock
Black & Murray; third quarter 19th century
The gilt dial mask and centre profusely engraved with flower heads amongst scrolling foliage, the chapter ring with painted Roman chapters and signed Black & Murray at XII, the twin chain fusee movement with five vase-shaped pillars, large platform lever escapement with plain gold balance, strike/trip repeat on a bell on the similarly signed backplate with strike/silent lever, the case profusely engraved overall with scrolling foliage and flower heads on a hatched ground, the top with acorn finials to the angles and central bevelled escapement viewing aperture beneath the polygonal handle with scroll hinges, leaf-engraved -columns supported on a foliate engraved base and bun feet, the heavily cast rear door pierced and engraved with scrolling foliage
